Win in the National I love Plastic -campaign
Vaasa took the win in National Broadcasting company’s Yle's I love plastic campaign in 2019.
The goal of the campaign was to spread information about plastic recycling, get Finns to sort their packaging plastic and value plastic as a raw material. In 2019 the recycling of packaging plastic was just starting nationally.
The city of Vaasa participated in Yle's nationwide I love plastic recycling campaign. During the campaign, Vaasa competed with four other Finnish Cities, Tampere, Lahti, Joensuu and Oulu to see who collects the most recyclable packaging plastic waste.
Competition
The competition period was three days, which culminated to an organised market event. Everyone from Vaasa could participate in the competition by bringing their own packaging plastic waste to the collection points. During the competition, a total of 3869.6 kg of plastic was collected in Vaasa in proportion to the number of inhabitants.
Enthusiastic stakeholders
The victory required cooperation with local companies, organisations, sports teams, schools and kindergartens. The project team's enthusiasm and ideas caught on with stakeholders, who participated in the challenge in large numbers. The market event was also made possible by the contribution of several different companies to the event.
Examples of procedures:
-
Residents could travel for free if they had a bag of packaging plastic waste with them.
-
Residents received a 20% discount ticket to the city centre shops on the day of the event in exchange for a bag of packaging plastic waste.
-
Residents got to the movies for free with packaging plastic waste.
-
